The RIVAL Pet Food story began more than 75 years ago. Since then, RIVAL has delivered balanced nutrition that helps pet owners keep four-legged family members happy and healthy. Following is a brief history of the path we've traveled.
Where It All Began In 1923, Meyer Katz founded the RIVAL Packing Company of Chicago, marking the origin of RIVAL as a meat packing plant.
Pet Food Pioneer
RIVAL entered the pet food market with RIVAL Dog Food in 1932. Sales grew quickly and consistently with RIVAL soon becoming the market share leader.
Satisfying a Shortage
During World War II, the RIVAL packing plant was converted to produce wartime rations.
Leading the Pack
In the booming post-war economy that began in 1945, RIVAL led the industry in helping to feed furry, four-legged family members.
More Than One Billion Sold
In the same year TV dinners were introduced, 1954, RIVAL celebrated the sale of its one billionth can of pet food and launched the first dry dog food.
Coming Together
In 1956, RIVAL was sold to Associated Products, a division of Consolidated Groceries (the company that later became known as Sara Lee).
RIVAL Leads Industry Rivals
As the early 1960s moved forward, dry dog foods increased in popularity and RIVAL continued to be the brand preferred by more families.
Pets Are People, Too
As pets became more and more a part of families, RIVAL launched a line of exciting foods-Burgers 'n Gravy, Medium Rare, and Chicken Croquettes-for dogs who liked to eat like people.
Making Puppies Happy Everywhere
In 1962, Rival began market testing a dry dog food named for what dogs were inclined to do each time they tried it: Wagtail.
RIVAL Wears a Blue Ribbon
As the 1960s came to a close, Nabisco purchased the RIVAL brand, which became known as RIVAL Blue Ribbon.
Taking a Step Back
In the mid 1970s, Rival moved to the background of the pet food market as competitors pushed forward with high-priced gimmicks.
Tail-Wagging Value
In the mid 2000s, Big Lots licensed RIVAL from Stenning Brands, LLC., offering great-tasting pet food available at closeout prices.
